RenataFelt Tutorial- “Pintar con Lana” en Español

January 10th, 2012 by Mariana · Category: Fibre Art, News, tutorials · Tagged:

Just shortly, up there I am letting my spanish readers know that I have collaborated with Renata from RenataFelt in the translation of one of her tutorials into spanish. No economical gain on my part, just lending a hand!

It is a very detailed and extensive tutorial with lots of photos and for those of you who aren’t capable to get to Lithuania or anywhere near Renata for a workshop, this is a good alternative.

The same tutorial comes in it’s english version. For those of you interested, check Renata’s shop or follow the links bellow:

- Tutorial Painting with wool in ENGLISH

-Tutorial Pinta con Lana en ESPAÑOL

In both cases, you get a PDF file!

De-gumming Silk throwster Waste -Tutorial

January 7th, 2012 by Mariana · Category: Fibre Art, Fibre Texture Tutorials · Tagged:

Hey everyone… Im still pregnant and more dedicated to ceramics right now (less physical demand), but I wanted to pass along the link to a very clear, easy to follow tutorial done by Zed from the Felting and Fiber Studio on how to degum Silk throwster waste, that is how to prepare it for use. Already de-gummed Silk Throwster it is normally way more expensive than the raw stuff that one can degum and dye at home. Silk throwster is a very nice material to work with and add some texture and shine to your textile pieces.

So here is the link to the tutorial: Degumming Silk Throwster Waste.

…and the kiln was fired…

January 4th, 2012 by Mariana · Category: Ceramics · Tagged: ·····

It took us for ever what with electrical stuff that had to be re-arranged and this… and then that… and well.. months passed by and frustration mounted but we were extremely busy with other things. Now finally, while we wait (yes, Im still pregnant!)we fired the ceramic kiln.

Not 100% succesful. Well, we didn’t burn down Mr Husband’s workshop -where the kiln is housed- so that should count as a ‘success’.  I wanted to experiment with some pigments and glass and it didn’t completely worked. What used to be lovely reds and yellow colours are now a big splash of brown.

So… back to the drawing board! Let’s re think this. The one little bowl that had a perfect finish, beautiful even colour… a glory! Well, that one broke in the hands of the my son. Oh well….

I still like these tumblers even though the colours are really soft…

Some links for you…

December 16th, 2011 by Mariana · Category: News · Tagged:

It’s not much what I can do these days. The belly is giganormous and gets in the way. I’ve done some cochineal dyeing on the spun yarn, but haven’t been able to take pics with this awful grey weather. I do have a huge list of projects and things I *intend*  to do once I’m … not pregnant anymore. Illusions! After that I will be taking care of a little one!! But anyway… one dreams…

I thought I’d pass along some of those links I’ve found on the net. Maybe they are helpful or inspire you too:

  • Via Kim, I just learnt about this project starting next year: Take a Stitch Tuesday. Every Tuesday, a new embroidery stitch. This comes courtesy of Sharon b’s Pin Tangle blog.  I’m not planning to be a pro but embroidery can always add something to felting… and in the end, it is one more skill!

  • Many of you might know of this website already, I just bumped into it yesterday. The Felting and Fibre Studio: An International Collective of Felt and Fibre Artists. Nice to spend some time clicking around!

  • I know many of you are entering the “summer” part of the year. I like to crochet in summer… seems easy to bring along to the pool, ocean… or even on vacations. I’m no expert but it’s entertaining. Here is a little list of tutorials and blogs I’ve found:
  1. Tutorial on a fun crochet Swirl coming from Zoom Yummy. Lots of goodies on that blog!
  2. Tutorial on how to crochet fun, colorful covers for clothe’s hangers. It’s in dutch but you can translate and it is actually pretty obvious from the pics! Hangers in een jasje  from Haken en meeer.
  3. Lots of stuff here in Tipnut. And this page with 12 Free Granny Square Patterns to Crochet, is fantastic!

  • Books on textiles: I love buying books that will show me something new or just inspire. On this page, there is a long list of Artisan  Books here.  Maybe something will interest you?

One week until Christmas! Ready?

Dana Barnes

December 6th, 2011 by Mariana · Category: Fibre Art · Tagged: ···

I know, not much happening in this blog these days… my head is full of other stuff. But I wanted to leave you, the ones still coming by, a very interesting link: Design Milk.  The artist is called Dana Barnes. See the amount of things one can do with unspun wool! Very inspirational.

updating…

November 28th, 2011 by Mariana · Category: Dyeing, Felt, Spinning · Tagged: ··········

{ES, abajo}

Well, must be a first… I haven’t posted anything here for a while. Or checked other blogs. It’s getting increasingly difficult to sit up without feeling the complains from the resident inside of moi… just about 6 weeks to go now!

I have slowly been doing some stuff. Catching up. You know all those projects you start and you sort of run out of inspiration? However you dont want to throw them away… just save them for later. Later can be a couple of years later… such is this case!

I’m doing some of that with this:

This is just a little corner of a very colorful surface.

I keep spinning. The silk and merino from last time is now being mordanted and I will be dyeing it shortly. I have to decide the colour still! I’ve been doing some coiling with the spinning wheel. Coils are always fun and add a whole lot of texture to any felted project. I have never knitted or woven with them, but I guess they would look super cool.

I want to dye those too so in the mordant bath they go…

I’m going to try and catch up with other blogs too! Hope everybody is doing ok!

{ES}

Espero anden bien!

Lana

November 14th, 2011 by Mariana · Category: Fibre Art, Spinning · Tagged: ········

Felting is quite a task for me these days… but spinning some gorgeous merino and silk… much more relaxing. I can not sit around doing nothing. So during the day I spin, at night when I sit down to relax, I knit.
