As autumn arrives, the chores that comes with it press on the agenda. There is a window of a few weeks where, if one has a vegetable patch, lots of things have to be done. It’s harvest time. In my garden, amongst tomatoes, zucchinnis, brussel sprouts, lettuce, leek and other things; I have loads of marigolds.

I’m not sure if it easy to see, but that big plant in the middle is a Brussel Sprouts plant. All those orange, yellow and red spots are marigolds (Tagetes are these ones). These flowers, quite common and hardy (they grow anywhere!) have different functions: a) give colour to the garden, b) attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators c) they serve as “repellents” for bugs and d) when harvested on time can serve well in the dyer’s pot!

I like plants that can have several uses. The marigolds give a range of green-ish to golden colour in the dyer’s pot depending on mordants and modifiers. One has to harvest them when the flower is in it’s prime. I usually manage the “marigold plantation” by leaving some flowers behind to become seeds which in turn will be the “mothers’ of next year’s crop. I don’t take all the flowers at the same time so bees have some needed flowery hubs in these days that start being a bit dark, cold and wet.

I put my harvest (this bag has about 1kl of flower heads) in the freezer. According to some literature (I really can’t remember where I read this! bibliography is extensive… Jenny Dean? India Flint?) the cold of the freezer helps the water molecules in the flower to break and the colour then comes out easier when defrosted and used in the pot. It is also quite handy to be able to freeze, as I am now busy harvesting a whole lot of stuff, processing it… and then I can use all these things later on in the year.

So there you go… if you ever start a veggie garden, add some merigolds. Trusty, hard working little flower which adds a huge amount of colour to your garden, your eyes… and your dyer’ s pot!

———

Playing by theme today… “Your favourite Happy”… well, what makes me happy I thought… the parrots’ pic was taken by Mr Husband a few years ago back in the town where I was born, by the sea. That particular pic has been published all over the place and it also is part of the media archive of endangered species ARKive
The sheep from the wool, that little kid (my son), the sea, my husband… being back home… all those things make me happy. I could have added a whole lot more… but mostly… just the small, simple things make me happy.

In the name of science I keep experimenting! Well, not really… to be scientific I should have done a whole lot of note taking, measuring and stuff which I didn’t do. I always say… “this time I’m going to measure everything, write it down so I can repeat it…” and then half way through the experiment I get so absorbed in the process I forget about all my scientific efforts…

So, in case it helps other people… while I was dying with brazilwood, I added some raw wool… it hadn’t been washed or mordated. I just threw it in the pot afterwards…to see what would happened. And the result was this pink colour:

When I was dying with weld, I dipped the wrap in an old copper pot. I didn’t heat it up or anything… long exposure to copper, or heating a copper source – as I understand- would release the particles that are toxic to us.

So since it was a wrap -something you wear and comes in contact with skin- I took it out very quickly. It was dipped for like… half an hour and then I got bored But I did throw in the raw wool… and I forgot… so a week, 2 weeks went by and I remembered them. And this is what I found: very dark purple…

—

(FOTO 3).

Every month a group of 9 crafts women from around the world, join to answer each in their own way, the same question. This month is a challenge! Each of us submitted a picture of our own making, voted and then the idea was to make with our medium of choice a version of the winning picture.Translate 2D to 3D.

Kim’s photo of water balloons won. Here it is:

So I thought… I want round shapes, I want them in different colours… I have to make something to reproduce or at least hint at the at the air bubble there on top of the balloons… different heights and it has to be included or surrounded by another round shape…so this is what I got:

And my husband already found a purpose for it (although I was planning to hang it on the wall!)…

That reflection on the kettle… Olaf, our black lab… I am standing behing him and on the right… the future studio!

Do please check the answers of the other artists that take part of this Merry- go -round. The links are on the right hand menu!

—-ESP

Remember a few days ago I posted about this wrap or scarf made with silk and merino. Very light and soft. Well, I dyed it with weld which gives a very pretty yellow. Since I was experimenting, afterwards I dip it in an old copper pot. I didn’t heat it up at all but I think the colour, the yellow, became even brighter.

The subtle variations in the colour absorption between the wool and the silk, make of this wrap something very delicate and elegant… I think!

(more details in pictures bellow).

I hope the lace which was nuno felted is more visible now (here bigger).

My weekend: I nuno felted lace and then hand dyed it with brazilwood chips. This is the first extraction of colour and I am looking forward to see the other shades that this dye stuff can give. This piece was mordated with alum. The colour is so vibrant and the fabric so soft! Love it!

Me encanta…
