Dyeing is a relatively new activity for me. I started dyeing with commercial dyes a few years ago but more for fun than for work. So it didn’t  happen regularly.

In the back of my mind I always wanted to try natural dyeing. We, as a family, try to minimize the amount of pollution that we throw out there in the world on a daily basis. You could say we try to be “green”. We grow our own food so I thought… why not try growing some dyeing plants. Or using any of the plants that we already have… I happen to find a book by Jenny Dean “THE CRAFT OF NATURAL DYEING” (1994, Search Press). I found it very easy to follow although names like alum and mordants and stuff like that threw me off a little bit. I started with simple stuff like onion skins, flower heads, spices… and then I found Jenny’s website, and started talking to her and exchanging ideas. And thanks to her encouragement and the addition -as a gift from her- of her book “COLOURS FROM NATURE – A DYER’S HANDBOOK” (2007, Search Press) I took the leap and started my dyeing experiments with logwood and walnut hulls. I’m still learning so bear with me.

Teñir es una actividad relativamente nueva para mi. Hace un par de años empece a hacerlo pero mas por hobby o diversión que por trabajo. Por lo tanto, no lo hacia muy seguido.

En el fondo, siempre quise probar las tinturas naturales. Como familia tratamos de vivir lo mas “verde” posible. Tenemos nuestra huerta adonde crecen los vegetales que comemos todos los días. Entonces pensé, por que no probar tener plantas que mas tarde pueda yo utilizar como fuente tictorica.

En una de esas vueltas me encontré con un libro de Jenny Dean, “THE CRAFT OF NATURAL DYEING” (1994, Search Press)*. Lo encontre fácil de seguir aunque nombres como “alumbre” o “mordantes” me dejaban un poco desconcertada. Empecé con lo básico. Probando tinturas con cáscaras de cebolla, flores, especias.

Gracias al entusiasmo que me pasó Jenny, con quien comparto charlas a través de su blog y en privado, y con la adhisión a mi biblioteca de “COLOURS FROM NATURE – A DYER’S HANDBOOK” (2007, Search Press) tambien de Jenny Dean, que llegó como un regalo personal; de un paso adelante y empecé mis aventuras con los tintes naturales. Por ahora solo con Logwood o Campeche y cáscaras de nueces. Lentamente voy aprendiendo.
